The Appalachian Barn Gun is a plain working rifle. It is the kind of gun that was built for use rather than show, with no buttplate, no nose cap, no entry pipe, no sideplate, and no patchbox. These were the rifles that fed families and stayed by the door in some of the most rugged country in the eastern United States. Jim drew this one directly from an original barn gun in a friend's collection, so it is true to the period in both spirit and detail.

Because the design is simple, this is one of the easiest builds we offer. That makes it a good first project, and a good one to build alongside a son, daughter, or grandchild. Fewer parts and simpler assembly mean more time spent on the work itself. The design is ours and the machining is ours. The hand work, and the satisfaction, are yours.

It is built around a 38-inch swamped barrel, and the finished rifle is light and well balanced, comfortable for most shooters. If you want to hunt with it, Jim suggests the .45 caliber. It is large enough to take whitetail deer and still makes for an easy-handling rifle. We also suggest adding the grease hole. It holds a small amount of patch lubricant, it is traditional on this style of rifle, and it looks right at home. Because the design is plain, we can offer it at a lower price than our other kits, which puts a traditionally built muzzleloader within reach of more people.

Liquid Shipping

Liquids will not ship in the kit box. There are different regulations that apply to the chemicals that we sell and they will need to ship ground, when the kits will ship USPS Priority Mail. Plus, it would really stink if a liquid were to leak on your beautiful new kit!

Order tracking

You will receive tracking information when your item ships. For kits, you will be contacted before shipment and after shipment so there is no need to worry about a kit box shipping when you are out of town. All other packages will ship when available and you will be emailed a tracking link.
