The classic plains rifle, and a great first build
The J.K. Hawken is our take on the Hawken plains rifle of the mid-1800s St. Louis and western frontier, the half-stock percussion rifle that went west with hunters and travelers. It is authentic to the spirit of the originals, and it is a percussion rifle, which is reliable and straightforward and makes it a good first muzzleloader for many builders. We rate it easy for beginners because the inletting and the hard machining are already done. You will still finish the wood and metal, but you do not need a shop full of tools or prior gunsmithing experience.
The design is ours and the machining is ours. The hand work, and the satisfaction, are yours. If you want help deciding, read our guide on how to choose a Hawken rifle kit.
The Hawken percussion lock is included. The price you see is the complete kit price.

J.K. Hawken Rifle Kit
The Hawken kit was beyond my expectation. Learned a great deal and followed Jim’s videos. I have completed the build and it came out beautifully. I was so anxious to see the final result, I may have hurried it a bit and next time I’ll be more patient and slow it down. Anxious to start my next build, hopefully on a Woodsrunner.
Received the rifle kit in perfect condition. The cherry wood was very nice.
But….after some fine sanding I dampened the wood with tap water and a paper towel to raise the grain prior to final sanding. The next morning I found the stock covered in black mold!
I am experienced in wood working and have reconditioned numerous rifle stocks. Never had this experience before. I searched the internet and found one person who had the same issue on a piece of cherry furniture he had made himself. He used table vinegar to wash the mold off. I did the same. 90 %of the mold was removed but some mold did get far into the grain to discolor the wood. The person who wrote this on the internet said they found a product called Concrobium, by Rust-Oleum. They use this product exclusively for raising the grain of wood. (Kills mold)
So, I now have an imperfect cherry stock that I’ll have to live with.
Why this happened.. don’t know. My shop is conditioned and has a dehumidifier . Humidity is kept between 40-50%.
I enjoy your products and videos. Keep up the high quality and standards.
If you ever have a leftover, Hawken stock you need to move…send me an email.
Respectfully, Jake
Got this quick ship kit in standard maple and 54 caliber. Stock really popped with two coats of tannic acid and iron nitrate. Very pleased with how the kit went together. It was a little more challenging than the Woodsrunner, but it was worth the effort.
First time with a project like this, I think it turned out pretty well. It was challenging but not too complicated. The parts came together flawlessly, then came the metal finishing and wood finishing. Being new to this and no mentors in my area to give me advice I have no idea if I did it well, but I think it came out pretty good. I followed the directions to a T, although I wish there had been more instructions on finishing the Iron parts.
Cherry stock is flawless; no sap wood and grain is colorful. Minimal wood work needed for assembly. Can work steel parts to desired shine. An excellent kit.

Fantastic kit! The Hawken almost falls together, everything fits with little finish work. In the end it looks great and preforms very well. Highly recommend.
What a great kit! Built a tc with dad and my grandpa when I was a teen. Always wanted to build another rifle. Quality kit! Four weeks off and on. Enjoyed the build. And now the barn rifle is ready to order, temptation from Mr. Kibler.
Thank you. Looking forward to sighting it in.
Got my Hawkin rifle kit and everything looks great! The parts are ready to have finishing touches applied and the inletting is so exact that there's almost no inletting work left for the buyer to perform before completing the assembly!
Hi Kibler's and crew . This is David, Yes I received my Hawken and I love it, I can't believe how beautiful it is just in the box, I got it all put together, Now come the shaping and sanding, Thank you for a beautiful kit it's going to be fun shooting it, Thank you all.
Best kits on the market! This was my 3rd kit and it was as enjoyable as the others! Time for a 4th! I want them all.
The 50 and 54 Hawken rifles I ordered turned out beautifully and easily right out of the box and I'll be ordering the 45 soon. Thank you for another line of fine rifles!
I am sure many before me have expressed their praise for the new JK Hawken rifle kit and I will be no exception. My personal opinion is it is OUTSTANDING. I have not done a lot of kit rifles before but have done a few over the years and this is the best kit I have had the privilege to do. I like it so well I am certain that there will be another one in the not-too-distant future. Thank you Jim Kibler for making such a fine product for all of us Jeramiah Johnson want-a-bee's.
The rifle turned out exactly and I mean exactly the way I wanted. The kit was very easy to assemble. The tannic acid and iron nitrate finish was incredible. Customer service was excellent!!can’t wait to build another one.
Work of art. My metal work is out to Gordon Alcorn for engraving. I will share a complete set of photos once the rifle is completed.
When I received the kit I found that you didn’t add test pieces of cherry, so I went ahead and built the kit. I rolled the dice on the finish, crossed my fingers and it came out just as I wanted. This not a bad review, I think you guys are great, but things happen. Now I’m waiting on my 16ga Fowler, this will be my 6th kit and probably not my last
In my opinion this is the finest muzzleloader I have ever owned. My first ever kit and I enjoyed the process of building, I’m extremely pleased.
This is my second kibler kit. I completed the colonial rifle first, very happy with the outcome. After watching Jim's assembly video on the Hawken. It was immediately apparent I needed one of those as well. I was very impressed with how well everything fit together. Almost no inletting work. I purchased it in .50 caliber. Considering a second barrel in .58 caliber.
The muzzle loader is everything I had hoped it would be. Excellent craftsmanship and fine wood stock. It is authentic looking which is most of the reason I went with a Kibler. It's not some plastic looking stock and odd caricature of what someone thought a Hawken gun may look like. The Kibler folks are real "students of the game." A rare find in this day and age. You can trust they have done their homework before anything hits the market. Well done.
The kit took twice as long to show up as I expected - but the quality is Superb (as expected). No issues completing - but be prepared to do a little xacto knife trimming of the inlets - or chance splintering out when you remove the components for wood finishing. This is much better than having gaps. Just DON'T force parts down into snug inlets! Use a little prussion blue and patience. Wonderful kit!!!
This kit is well designed and machined. I got the walnut stock German Silver inlay with the patch box. Currently trying to find tile to finish the rifle. Getting it assembled in the white takes a couple hours. Everything fit as nice as a well tailored suit. Taking my time on the finishing to get it just right. If you want a Hawken style rifle this is your kit!

Liquid Shipping
Liquids will not ship in the kit box. There are different regulations that apply to the chemicals that we sell and they will need to ship ground, when the kits will ship USPS Priority Mail. Plus, it would really stink if a liquid were to leak on your beautiful new kit!
Order tracking
You will receive tracking information when your item ships. For kits, you will be contacted before shipment and after shipment so there is no need to worry about a kit box shipping when you are out of town. All other packages will ship when available and you will be emailed a tracking link.
