I am making a new handle using tiger maple for my vintage Disston tenon saw and searched YouTube for ideas for finishing. I saw the videos by Kibler using iron nitrate and I was intrigued by its results. So I thought I give it a try. Of the test results I performed my intrigue was fulfilled. My best test was using TransTint “Reddish Brown” on top of the iron nitrate solution followed by three coats of boiled linseed oil and topped with blonde shellac using a French Polish method. The grain just pops and has a 3D effect. I am making a larger test piece as I write this review. The one caveat I have is I was unable to unscrew the plastic lid off of the plastic bottle. I used my hacksaw to cut the lid off as a last resort. I transferred the contents of the bottle into a glass beaker with a sealable lid. Now it really looks intriguing.
The stock arrived fast. When I opened the package, I was stunned. The wood was fantastic. I would say that it must have been the extra fancy maple. Carves very well, as I am a wood carver I can feel when I need to attack it from another direction. Again, amazing wood and color. I will be using this more often than other woods.
The kit arrived boxed to perfection and in a timely manner. Everything was secured and in good order. I am currently building the rifle which has been a rare delight. The parts are very close to install ready, however, just enough filing, sanding, and polishing to do. The fancy maple stock provided has nice figure and looks great. I would encourage everyone to look into the Kibler's kits and will be buying a Hawken kit when it becomes available. The videos Jim has done on You Tube are a highly valuable resource for completing your kits. Thanks, Darrell Morse.
