Works fantastic. Best if you use a medium Scotch Bright pre finish and try to keep all strokes in the same direction. 0000 steel wool to bring out highlights.
Very impressed with the quality. I have not had a chance to use it on my colonial lock yet, but I have clapped down on everything within arm's reach of my desk. I have a great appreciation of the functionality of the thumb screw, but it more historically correct thumb screw would be a nice addition to the piece. As I start my colonial build I look forward to using the vise as intended.
Building my SMR was a great experience. When I started I really didn’t know what to expect. I watched and rewatched the YouTube videos and then went back to them as I progressed through each step. The only issues I had were: the rear sight dovetail slot was cut a little shallow and I opened up the ramrod channel instead of reducing the outside diameter of the ramrod. It worked out but I should have known better. I sanded the wood to 320, stained with iron nitrate and finished with about 10 hand rubbed coats of Kibler oil. I wish that I had sanded the stain back a little to lighten the color. Metal was finished with Jax Black. Shooting for the first time was a great experience. Very quick lock time and ignition. Accuracy is very good. Next step is to work up the best load combination and move the point of impact a bit. I am hooked and forever a fan of the Kibler organization.
Ordered a second barrel for my Woodsrunner kit, fits perfectly exactly like the original with the kit.
Got this kit in smoothbore 54 cal to use for hunting. Assembly was really easy and it parts fit with minimal effort. Lock works perfectly and is timed well. I appreciate that fitting takes minimal time as it allows for you to be more creative and spend more time on engraving and carving to personalize your kit. Can't wait to take it out for turkey and flintlock season!
