The easiest way into a longrifle

The Woodsrunner is our most approachable longrifle, and the one we point first-time builders and gift-givers to. It is light, easy to carry, and a friendly first build. The stock is CNC machined to close tolerances, the holes are drilled, and the hard machining is done before it ships, so you can finish one with patience and a basic set of hand tools. The design is ours and the machining is ours. The hand work, and the satisfaction, are yours.

It is patterned after an original frontier rifle, often called the "Woodsrunner," believed to have been made in Virginia in the 1760s. If you want a historically grounded American longrifle and the most straightforward path to a finished rifle, this is where to start.

The Round-Faced English lock is included. The price you see is the complete kit price.

Carving is an optional add-on: $295 for Relief Carved and $415 for Incised Carved. Both are done on our CNC machine.

CNC carving options

Relief carving is available as an option. Decoration was a normal part of most longrifles of this period, and some form of relief carving was the norm. It adds a great deal of character to a longrifle. Standard or fancy maple often pairs well with relief carving, and it is available in cherry or walnut as well.

Finished rifles

We do not finish rifles in house. For additional finishing work on your Kibler rifle, we recommend the talented and experienced gunsmith Chuck Edwards. He can be reached at (573) 421-5098 and his page is on Facebook. He has finished many Kibler rifles and does fantastic work. Pricing varies with the work and should be discussed with Chuck.

Carving, wood, and caliber each affect price and lead time — notes on each option are below so you know what you're choosing before you order.

Clean, undecorated stock — the fastest option to finish yourself since there's no carved detail to work stain and finish around. Good for first-time builders who want to focus on fit and finish before tackling carving on a future build.

Raised, dimensional carving cut on our CNC machine — the classic Kibler carved look. Pairs especially well with standard or fancy maple since the figure shows through the raised carving. Not sure which comb pattern to pick? Choose "Surprise Me" in your order notes and we'll select one for you.

CNC Incised Carved (+$415)

Carving is cut into the surface rather than raised, for a flatter, more subdued look than relief carving. A good option if you want carving without as much surface relief to catch dust or bump damage during handling and finishing.

Standard Maple

Solid figure, straightforward to finish, and normally our fastest wood option to ship since it's always in stock. Good pick if you want to start building sooner rather than later.

35-65% curl. The figure "pops" more once stain and finish go on, with noticeably more depth than standard maple — a favorite pairing with carved stocks since the figure shows through the carving.

65-90% curl, the most dramatic figure we offer. These blanks are rarer, so this option can carry a longer wait than the rest of the wood lineup — check current lead times if timing matters to you.

Walnut (+$225)

Straighter grain than maple with a naturally darker tone, so it needs less stain to reach a deep color. Good choice if you want a rifle that reads older or more subdued right out of the box.

Cherry

Fine, tight grain that deepens and reddens naturally with age and light exposure, even under a clear finish. Pick this if you want the color to visibly develop over the years without restaining.

You provide the blank and we CNC your wood instead of ours, as long as it meets the size minimum listed above. Since we're machining your material, inspect it carefully for hidden checks, knots, or high moisture content before shipping it to us — that risk shifts to you with this option.

.45 Rifled

Our smallest-bore option on the Woodsrunner. Mild recoil and inexpensive to shoot, a good choice for a first flintlock or a rifle you plan to shoot often. Well suited to targets and small game.

.50 Rifled

 Enough power for deer-sized game in most states while staying easy to load and shoot regularly.

#50Smooth

.50 Smooth (Smoothbore)

No rifling, patterned after early smoothbore/fowling-style barrels. Good if you want to shoot round ball and shot from the same barrel, or you're aiming for an earlier, more general-purpose piece. Check your state's regulations before hunting with a smoothbore.

.54 Rifled

Our largest rifled bore on the Woodsrunner — more recoil and cost per shot than .45 or .50, with extra margin for larger game. Our most popular caliber in the Woodsrunner

Our largest smoothbore option, with the same round ball/shot versatility as the .50 Smooth and more punch. Confirm smoothbore hunting legality in your state before choosing this over a rifled bore.
