Southern Mountain Rifle Front Sight

This was the first kit out of four I've ordered with no upgrade of the maple stock and it is beautiful wood! These kits are the best thing to ever happen to the muzzle loading market and far surpass any rifle kit I've ever ordered with superior barrels, stocks and parts with accuracy you've never got from a kit. The close up photo is of the stock I didn't upgrade!

What I can say is the Southern Mountain Rifle is my favorite Kibler rifle. I just finished the Woods Runner, which I love. Now eyeing the Barn left handed rifle. But the Southern Mountain is my favorite Kibler flint lock.

Perfect fit

Well made. I wish Jim offered a silver version of this sight. I found one, but I had to look elsewhere, and it's not the same height.

Good quality, but where too low for me to use effectively, changed the sights to aftermarket aperture and globe sights, but was soundly ridiculed on the Muzzleloading forum for doing so, even Mr. Kibler joined the derision. Members of my Muzzleloading club even changed the rules to prohibit the sights that I changed them to in our club matches. I confess that I don't understand the emotional objections to me altering my own rifle, but since I can no longer use it in our club matches, I have removed the aftermarket sights and reinstalled factory sights, and will probably either sell or trade the rifle for something I can use.

I purchased an SMR in .45 caliber from Jim Kibler. The fit and finish of the wooden and steel parts is outstanding, requiring very little effort for final smoothing and assembly. I think that the most effort for me, was the fitting of the rear sight. The lock is fantastic, fast and reliable and fine quality. The finished rifle is light weight and shoots great, I am so pleased with my finished kit, that I can’t wait to order a colonial rifle kit too. But first I need to take the SMR on a hunt!

I suppose this sight is traditional and all and it fit the dovetail perfectly but I’m not a strict traditionalist when it comes to my muzzleloader shooting. So when my 71 year old eyes coupled with the range orientation where I shoot made it hard to see the front sight I got the elevation filed down correctly and then I filed a longitudinal trough into the top of the sight and then super glued a 1mm diameter fiber optic fiber, cut about a centimeter long, in the trough. Works like a charm! There is not one thing I have purchased from Kibler that I am unhappy with.

It amazes me as to how these are constructed and how well. Was exactly what I needed considering I'm the one that messed the first on up !! Worked perfectly !

It’s a sight not much more than that

The SMR replacement sight that I received was way better than the one that came with my rifle kit. Nice edges and consistently smooth surfaces. Perfect tight fit!

Very little filing required for good fit

Great product. All the kits and products from Kibler are of high quality.

After build I started sighting in at 25 yard. Had to file front sight down quite a ways. Got it hitting at 25. Moved out to 50 four inches low. Did not want to file front sight down anymore so raised front blade above back sight 1/16 of inch to hit on at 50. Finally got tired of guess hight so bought higher back sight from TOTW. Had to file back sight. Oh I also replaced sight sight back to original. Ask Kibler about higher back sight and got response, we are thinking about making higher back sight for the SMR. Read a lot of requests for higher back sight for all his rifles.

After building 3 colonial rifles I put together the S M Rifle which quickly became my favorite. The x tra fancy maple stock is Indiscrible. The rifle is light weight with a perfect balance point at the rear sight. All parts fit well with little effort.
Jim puts out a high quality kit that will give the builder a rifle that they will carry proudly for a lifetime.

Southern Mountain Rifle Front Sight

I built a .36 SMR several years ago…greater shooter, no issues. I tried building a .32 SMR last year…pin holes in stock were way out of alignment causing blowouts. I threw away the stock. Now building .45 Woodsrunner…no issues…easier to build than SMR.

I can't speak to the size and placement of the originals, but for me at age 68, the front sight is much too thin and low, easily almost unseeable with the slightest glare. While I am a target shooter, for hunters, this sight would make target acquisition especially difficult and time consuming. My suggestion is a higher front and rear sight with somewhat thicker post and wider rear cutout.
