Laurel Mountain Forge Barrel Brown and Degreaser 2-1/2 oz Liquid
This chemical is subject to additional shipping charges when ordered with a kit.
Barrel Brown & Degreaser is a totally new concept in browning - it degreases and browns in the same easy application. Barrel Brown & Degreaser will work right through fingerprints, grease or oil films, giving an even, streak-free brown. It produces a durable, wear resistant rust brown or rust blue in 2 to 6 applications. One 2.5 oz. bottle contains enough material to brown 2 to 3 complete rifles.
Barrel Brown & Degreaser also can be used for rust bluing with the proper application.
Instructions are found here: https://www.laurelmountainforge.com/barrel_brown_inst.htm
These instructions are an expanded version of the instructions that are included with Barrel Brown & Degreaser. The directions should give even a beginner at rust browning or bluing a perfect job the first time. The process is not hard or overly complex, just follow our recommendations. If this is your first attempt at bluing or browning try it with a scrap piece of steel before attempting a whole barrel.
There is enough solution in one 2-½ oz bottle of Barrel Brown & Degreaser to brown at least 2 complete long guns.
Directions for Rust Browning:
Directions for Rust Bluing:
2. Apply second coat of Barrel Brown & Degreaser and allow it to work 3 to 12 hours.
3. Place the barrel in the scalding trough and scald with boiling water. Use enough water to thoroughly cover the barrel. Make sure the water you use is distilled. If the water used has any dissolved minerals, you will permanently keep the brown in the red Ferric state and it will never blue.
4. Once the barrel has cooled to the touch, remove it from the scalding bath and card off the rust scale. The carding method used is one of personal preference. Carding with a damp cloth and toothbrush is easier than the traditional steel wool or wire wheel, but produces a more matte finish.
5. Repeat steps 1, 3, & 4…applying Barrel Brown & Degreaser, Scalding and Carding two more times or until the desired depth of color is reached.

Haven't had a chance to use it yet but I'll definitely let you know.
I downloaded and followed the extended directions from the LM website and followed them to the letter. This included cleaning the entire barrel just in case something was on there after draw filing. I wore new gloves for each step and did 7 coats in all. During the process, random sections would develop darker or lighter spots that were not there during the prior coat. On coat 5 I had a small section of the browning dissappear by the touchhole area. On coat 6 a light spot appeared by the tang. Both spots I touched up with a toothpick. The final annoyance was when using the Arm and Hammer to neutralize the rusting process half the brown disappeared off the underside of the tang and the top flat (figures) became streaked. The oil bath and subsequent waxing with Museum Replica's wax blended most of it away but is still visiblefrom clcose up. Another annoyance is LM does not answer the phone or respond to emails. If I get to do another kit I think I'll try Casey's browning solution instead.
Wish I could review this product but have been too distraught over Kibler not releasing a Hawken kit yet so havent used it.
Works very well. Does require degreasing for more even coverage.
